And There Shall Be Chaos Part 2: The Coup d’Etat.

Riag 6 was the day of the festival, the reopening of the Kingdom of Throal. We figured if there was anytime for the Coup d’Etat, it’d be today. At the beginning of the day, we were called to a meeting in the King’s chambers. Sitting at the meeting was Ajmar the Admirable, famed Wizard and advisor of the king, J’Role leader of the Eye of Throal, ambassador Wishten, whom we escorted in our diplomatic mission trying to get the Declaration and Separation of War signed by the cities of Barsaive, Merrox, Master of the Hall of Records, Admiral Ilmorian, head of the Throal Navy, Grindo of House Neumani and friend of Neden, and Quaavami Rockbreaker, general of the Throal infantry divisions, as well as King Neden himself, of course. A long discussion of the deployment of Throalic forces ensued. It was suggested by J’Role that we join the Eye of Throal and look for suspicious activities, following the festival procession starting at the opening Gates of Throal at noon and ending at night with a grand speech by Neden in the Royal Auditorium. We were given a small plaque with the ritual of how to use the Far-Seeing Eye as well as a silver star. Farram was given the item. Clang and Isam Derr were off investigating for signs of the horrors we had fought previously to see if they were still in Throal, and thus could not attend the meeting. At the Gates of Throal during the opening ceremony with the King giving his proclamation of the safety of the town from Ropers speech, we were surprised to see some familiar faces, Torrig Swordbreaker of the Bloodspear clan of Cara Fahd, Toke Heartfire, and some new ones including an Ork Scout/Swordmaster named Keth who was seeking entry into the Slayers and a Horror Stalker/Elementalist named Rivendell who was seeking entry into V’Dor’s Grim Legion. Apparently Toke had made it back after all and sought to repay Drudge for saving his life and had Torrig take him here. After that, we paired off into two groups on either side of the King’s procession. One of our groups spotted a group of suspicious dwarves who seemed to be following the King intently, and that group asked if they were having a good time. Apparently, the dwarves said no, but they would be if the group would come have a drink with them. At the bar, the dwarves attacked them, but were subdued. After interrogating the dwarves, we learned that the weapons for the coup were stored in houses bearing five ribbons of red, orange, gold, silver, and blue color in open windows and that the coup’s signal is an explosion with two signal arrows. Farram passed the information to J’Role as well as the location of the prisoners. After this we raced to the Royal Auditorium, looking for archers. The King was giving a speech about the renewed need for strong Throalic leadership during these tough times in Barsaive. We saw one archer on the left going into an abandoned three-story house and one archer on the right immediately. We easily dispatched the one on the right, but Elarin was badly hurt when the signal arrow exploded on him. The one on the left was defeated on the third floor, but Drudge was holding onto a ledge by the tips of his claws, having blocked the signal arrow with his body. Luke had killed another archer. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to one of the archers in time and he got off his signal arrow in the correct location. Thus the Coup attempt was initiated. A Questor of Raggok and Crownbreaker turned many of the King’s Royal Guards against us and the King, and one of the Crownbreaker assassins hurled a Fireball at the King, badly injuring him and his bodyguards. His bodyguards knocked down the podium and put the King down on the other side to shield him from arrows. Meanwhile, the Earth Elemental serving Dram saved Drudge by casting Metal Wings on him, allowing him to fly out of his predicament and not fall to his death. The battle became chaotic with the throngs of Throalic citizens fleeing, and dwarves fighting dwarves and us everywhere throughout the Royal Auditorium. Meanwhile a female t’skrang Swordmaster and male troll Warrior were killing Royal Guards left and right slowly cutting a swath to Neden. After defeating the dwarves we made our way to the center and started defeating the Questor’s bodyguards. But the Questor used some kind of magic words causing wracking pain to the King. His bodyguards defeated a Thief assassin who tried to make a surprise strike on the King. We defeated the Questor and Elementalist in time to save Neden’s life. Neden got up and was met with immediate accusations from Selenda of being marked by a Horror. Neden then recited a poem on the visionary ideas his father Varulus the III had for Throal’s future. And in a further act of good will to Throal promised a Blood Oath to the Kingdom to always act in the interests of Throal. He then said he was indeed marked by a Horror, but that it had been defeated by these adventurers, pointing at the party, and told the party and everyone else responsible for defeating the coup to come on stage. Neden then stated that all those responsible for the coup be banished from Throal forevermore. Selenda left unhappily apparently having lost the day. We were invited to rest in the palace. Toke was nowhere to be found that night. When we next seen Selenda, she had a pretty big smile on her face (Well for her anyway…).
After that at breakfast, Isam Derr gave us terrible news, somehow Braza’s Kingdom had been unsealed and that there was a hydra-like Horror eating Throalic citizens. Our party left with Isam Derr. We did battle with the Horror in the streets of Throal, and although two Throalic citizens were killed, we defeated the Horror. We then guarded the gate to Braza’s Kingdom while Ajmar the Admirable, Farram, and other wizards worked to reseal the gate. Isam Derr thought that whatever remnants of Andokhas’s forces must have used this way to escape. He also announced the creation of a group of Horror Stalkers called the Hunters of Throal who would hunt Andokhas to the ends of Barsaive and the world if necessary to defeat him. After being lectured by Farram about the thin line between revenge and justice talking to Isam Derr in particular, we left to rest. Drudge, Luke and I negotiated with King Neden and used his pride to get him to sign the Theran Armistice the next morning. After this we decided to have a group meeting in front of Dram’s place. Drudge, Githral, Elarin, and his Slayers decided to leave for Bartertown, whereas Farram was staying in Throal for a while. Luke’s plan was to go defeat the Horror Storm before it entered Bartertown’s graveyard. We decided we’d stay in Throal for a week and then go after the Horror Storm because Dram needed to train. Dram told us about Oulin, a wizard friend of his who would probably come, if only to further his spell research. Rivendell and the Horror Stalkers decided to come. Keth was assigned to go with us by Drudge, and as a Slayer was honor bound to obey his groups’ leader. Thus it was that Drudge Tarcke and us parted yet again. After training for a week we thought we were ready to go. Luke had Evok get him a bunch of Death Cheat Blood Charms and Kelia’s Antidote: Ghoul Poison doses. Clang had decided to come with us, probably spying on us for Throal, but since we were going up against undead and he is a Nethermancer, we couldn’t argue with his decision to come. We left for Bartertown our starting point to enter the Throal Mountains.

The Storm of Horrors.

We journeyed into the Throal Mountains, first finding a wolf attacked by Undead Wolves and saved the wolf. Toke dominated him to make him an animal companion of his. I don’t think Toke will ever truly understand the Veil according to Luke. You can’t force the cooperation and trust of animals; it must be earned by your actions. Luke sees much of an evil Beastmaster in Toke, and much evil in him. He’d best be on his best behavior, as Drudge isn’t here to protect him anymore. After this we rescued a female human from a pack of undead Cave Trolls, Ogres, and One-Eyed Freaks! She talked strangely, but I could understand her when she spoke t’skrang. Fiona Flamehair, a woman of a mythical kingdom called Lasael, seeking our aid versus the Horror Storm. She needed our help, but Lasael was further away than Bartertown, so we decided to return there. We decided we’d use Toke’s connections and see if Torrig Swordbreaker and his drakkar was still around. They were, so we paid them for passage to Lasael. On the way, we fought off a group of cloud and lightning based horror constructs and got through to Lasael. Toke’s guard dog Dobbie died when he fell of the ship during the conflict. As we approached Lasael we saw a truly unreal sight, a gigantic man standing 14 feet tall and weighing around 7000 lbs holding a golden T-shaped hammer in a guard-like stance. Fiona called him Mjlonir, God of Thunder. A bubble was around Lasael, a much lighter-colored hue of storm than the black one we had been traveling through. Mjlonir requested that we defeat Fenrir, God of Animals who had been corrupted by the storm and was acting as a power source for the storm’s continued expansion. He also requested Fenris, Luke’s companion, which he gave to him. We then entered the maze of Lasael, with Fiona as guide. The architecture did not follow the norms at all featuring a design that any Name-Giver would consider bizarre ignoring concepts like gravity with upside-down and on-the-side structures. Rivendell said he seen a creature of fire, with a blue, wavy shield, a sword of pure energy, and armor made of granite. When he questioned Fiona she responded that it was Lasael, the source of all Gods and all things. After this we were lead to a tower going up and down several times before coming to a large city within a cave. Three red suns shone in the sky? And there was no storm here at all. The city streets were built too wide and with houses too large for its inhabitants. The Lasaelian people were larger than average humans though, with the women seemingly around 6’ tall and most men around 6’6” tall and much stronger and well built than most humans. Fiona led us through the streets to an impossible sight, an upside down castle. The castle had four towers each reaching higher than the last and a massive staircase weaving around the structure. We entered through the lowest tower, whose base touched the ground, unlike the rest of the castle. By all accounts, the structure should have fallen over while being built as its center castle and three towers would certainly not be balanced by one mere spire. At any rate, we entered the castle making the long journey up to the king’s chambers. It was here that we learned of two facts, that Fiona was Princess of Lasael?! (That tomboy’s a Princess?!) and that Lasael was at war with Throal. The King suggested we go see Tigana, an Elementalist in the castle. When we met her we were surprised to find out she spoke dwarf and was originally from the kingdom of Landis. She looked to be on her deathbed, weak and fatigued. She revealed that the Horror Storm originally attacked her ancestor’s citadel in Landis some 500 years ago during the beginnings of the Scourge. A powerful Elementalist named Tsiorara and her apprentice Varena used a powerful blood magic ritual to seal the Horror Storm in a crystal shard made of living crystal and orichalcum, defeating the Horror Storm for a time. Tigana had come to Lasael to try and find out more about the crystal and perhaps destroy the Horror Storm within. But when Mount Horrorsbane fell, a terrible accident occurred. Aftershocks of the event hit her lab in Lasael, knocking the crystal to the ground and shattering it, releasing the Horror Storm. She taught the Blood Magic Ritual to seal the storm to Dram and Rivendell. She promised to have a suitable new crystal by the next day. We spent the night in Lasael and when we returned to Tigana, she was dead, with a crystal in her hands. She had given her life to make the crystal for us. (Scribbled in as a sidebar in different ink and hand writing after entry into Throal’s library: Tsiorara gave her life originally to form the crystal and Varena to power the magic.-Unknown author).
Fiona led us out of Lasael into the Horror Storm to fight off Fenrir. First, we were accosted by a group of ork and horses made of rain that we dispatched easily. Next, Grey Wolf and his band of undead humans attacked us, injuring Fiona severely with Claw Frenzy. Luke attacked Grey Wolf in a rage felling him, and saving Fiona. Meanwhile our spellcasters pounded the cadaver men with Blizzard Spheres and Fireballs. Toke lost his wolf in this battle and it became undead and tried to kill Dram. I had to put the poor animal out of its misery.
The next day, we ran into the howling Fenrir. The gigantic undead Storm Wolf was as big as a mansion. Fenrir was powerful using a wide array of spells and attacks, but with our large number we eventually defeated him. Upon his defeat he shrunk to the size of a normal Storm Wolf. Luke had him buried. The storm also diminished in intensity, and then suddenly a large crashing sound was heard. An avalanche then blocked our current path, forcing us to climb around the backside of the mountain the next day. After that we saw a crashed drakkar and a bunch of troll cadaver men. Our spellcasters crushed them with spells, and our stealthy characters snuck onto the drakkar to battle the Captain. The Captain was holding a Battle Axe in the sky trying to reinitiate the storm. Luke was the first to reach him, and he lashed out with his claws. It wasn’t enough to stop the Horror Captain, who was none other than Mad Off! Mad Off then landed a punishing blow with the Mad Off Blade on Luke and he fell. Eventually V’Dor reached him, finishing him off with his Poleaxe. Luke was all right; his death cheat charm had saved him. After defeating the Horror Storm’s anchor, we were able to perform the ritual to seal the Horror Storm. The whole Horror Storm was sucked into the crystal, and inside you could see a small miniaturized Horror Storm. After this we returned to Lasael where we saw Mjlonir with an enlarged Storm Wolf, Fenris. Mjlonir promised Luke a reward in return for his animal companion. We returned to the castle where we negotiated a truce between Throal and Lasael in return for Dram staying in Lasael as guardian of the crystal. The party rested in Lasael for a week. Luke then received information from Mjlonir about a place called Kaer Fenaria. We stayed in Lasael an additional week researching the Kaer. V’Dor and Thyrnn left Lasael for Bartertown after the first week in Lasael on Teayu 9. Passion speed and good luck be with you two, as you’ll need it without Luke or Drudge’s guidance.

Drudge recap

My name is Shaq Fu-Lou. I’ve been traveling with Drudge on and off since he and I met mysteriously deep in the Liaj Jungle (See E-Dawn Volume 1 for more info).  You are probably wondering what happened to me after we unsealed the buried town in Throal. Well after training, I returned to the sealed area and guarded it with the Slayers. I interviewed many of the Slayers about who they are, how they met Drudge, and why they continue to follow Drudge. The human Swordmasters, Thorin and Rahl Mageblade as well as Vusal and Stahd Majir are brothers. They constantly talked about their relationship of younger and older brother. They talked as if the time of their creation actually mattered. All obsidimen treat all rockbrothers equally. I do not understand why energy-wasters believe that time is so important, why it even applies to their social status! At any rate, the four met Drudge at a Swordmaster tournament in Bartertown during last year’s much happier five-day Holiday. They were four against one and lost. Drudge had to struggle to win, and they developed a mutual respect and admiration of each other’s abilities. Why must they fight in order to respect and admire one another? I understand the want to entertain as a Troubadour, but to fight with swords that cut and bleed and call it entertainment is barbaric. At any rate, these were the first four to enter Drudge’s clan. As natives of Bartertown their goals and Drudge’s goals coincide. The next to join was Pavellis T’Vale, a t’skrang Swordmaster from House V’strimon, who idolized Drudge and came to Bartertown one day to find him. Why must the energy-wasters idolize others and their accomplishments? Should they not merely accomplish things themselves? As Pavellis is of the same House, the Slayers major long-term goal of defeating House K’tenshin appeals to him. Cracar Bouldersmasher was once a skilled Swordmaster who became a legendary Swordmaster. Originally from Throal and in the Arm of Throal he left the army, as he began to question Neden’s leadership after the Battle of Praijor’s Field. He wanted to be the first skilled Swordmaster in Drudge’s clan, but Drudge wouldn’t budge and eventually initiated him into the Swordmaster Discipline and allowed him to finally to join the Slayers. One of the greater questions about Cracar is where his true loyalties lie, with Throal or with Drudge? Perhaps he is going along with rebuilding Bartertown as a mere buffer for Throal? Mark Swiftsabre was convinced by Rahl to join the Slayers after he was beaten in the recent House V’strimon Swordmaster tournament. Mark’s goal is to be the fastest elf who ever lived. He is obsessed with speed and the Passion Floranuus. I found him to be completely irrational, why should an elf be obsessed with speed when their lifespan is so long? They need not rush to a destination at all. I also see no real reason why he is with Drudge at all. Perhaps it’s more out of a respect for Rahl than anything else. The most recent one to join is Juravis Soulsight, a Pale One who was blind in one eye and used an Astral-Sensitive Eye to regain his sight in that eye. He joined Drudge to get a taste of the outside world before he grew to old to adventure and to fight for the honor of his House Ch’elann versus Betrayer. Juravis is destined to leave Drudge, as the life of a Pale One contrasts with the aboveground world.

I returned to Bartertown with Drudge and the Slayers after Drudge defeated the Horror who had marked Neden and stopped the Coup and assassination attempt. Drudge sure is preoccupied with how to restore Bartertown. Energy-wasters sure are strange. It’s like they don’t understand that time must pass for problems to be solved and you can’t force time to move, so you might as well just go with the flow of time. But I did say I’d write Drudge’s memoirs, so I will continue to do so even if his actions are completely misguided.

Drudge wandered around Bartertown making contacts throughout most of the next two weeks. Of the more important people, he met with the new leader of Clan Crag Hack, a human Weaponsmith named Valaan and the one everybody calls Minor Magical Item guy instead of his real name. I don’t understand what’s so hard about the pronouncing the name Jafeedehelaah. Just say it slowly and concentrate on the syllables. The merchant is from Indrisa, which is over the Aras Sea past some high mountain range he called the Heemasalehas. Again syllables. I bought a lot of good items from him on Riag 15. The best is the Traveller’s Mugs. 8 of these cups and I never have to buy water again. Anyway, he bought Crag Hack’s old mansion from Valaan and learned that Jafeedehelaah had a lot of trade routes being established starting up Bartertown’s trade again but that the caravan’s were being attacked by bandits from Kratas and ork scorchers. He also went into the undead Throalic city with a group of Elementalists from Clan Crag Hack and most of his Slayers and eliminated all the cadaver men in there. He got paid a lot of money by Neden and negotiated with him to get Throal to build a wall around Bartertown and protect Bartertown from bands of undead and ork scorchers with troops.

With everything in order in Bartertown as far as he could tell, Drudge went to fulfill a promise to his dead former trainer T’Voral Songsword to teach the Servos Jungle T’skrang’s new chief everything he knew about the discipline of the Swordmaster. I wanted to go with him, but I can’t ride a horse nor afford a caravan and a lot of Granlains that could transport me. I did negotiate a deal with him, 25% of my profit for use of the Forge in Crag Hack’s mansion. As he left, the Skull Whargs started a massive attack on Bartertown, but Throalic troops and Drudge, Elarin, and Githral pushed them back saving the new bazaar. Good Luck Drudge. I wish I could follow you and continue your memoirs. Well perhaps there is a way…

War recap

We arrived at Sky Point. As our ship is Theran and we flew the Theran flag, they didn’t suspect anything and thus maybe blow us out of the sky. Yeah, there is a truce supposedly, but better to be on the safe side just in case. We needed to rest the crew for a few days, and I needed to talk with some Theran officers about some things. For one thing, the Tome of Banishment was far more powerful than I could have ever imagined. It seems that it was designed to work best when three powerful spellcasters, a Nethermancer, an Elementalist and a Wizard working together in tandem. Using Ritual Magic we might be able to defeat the Rakken. But I need to find a powerful Wizard and Elementalist first. I can probably find at least an Elementalist here, and maybe a Wizard in Vivane.

-Moltaa, Obsidiman Nethermancer/Horror Stalker of the Grim Legionnaires. Legion Journal. 53/1 TE 1074.

The Battle for Sky Point?

And so it has come to this. The Horrorship has been following Moltaa’s vessel for a while and we have been following it, the combined Theran Seventh and Eighth Navies and the remnants of the Bartertown Navy. Moltaa inexplicably stopped at Sky Point and then left southeast, and now the Horrorship is nearing one of our main operating points in Barsaive. Its too bad Throal was just unsealed, as their Navy would have been helpful in this battle. Even now the Horrorship is launching its dreaded Rakken en route to Sky Point. With most of our Barsaive based Navy here, Sky Point and Vrontok are probably doomed. By the Passion’s what is that? Moltaa’s vessel here? The Rakkeni are disappearing. NOW’s our chance! All men to battle stations, all ships advance!

-From the Journal of General Nikar 53/3 TE 1074.

The combined Theran and Barsaivian forces sure are stupid. Yeah we’ve devised a way to stop the Rakken, but not the Horrorship or the Horror controlling it, so why take the risk? Now that’s fairly impressive. I’ve never seen a Horrorship in action before. Goodbye one Throalic Galleon, chopped in half by what, a giant black pincer? And goodbye Theran Vedette too, some sort of black/green cloud spat out by the thing killed all the Theran crew. Now what’s the Horrorship doing? Oh of course, coming after me. If I remember correctly that weasely looking Theran windling Azim Keel was an Elementalist. I’ll have Coates send him an Air Speaking message telling General Nikar to stop his moronic attack and follow me, to Great Thera. I need answers about the Horrorship and how it’s controlled. Perhaps the greatest library in all the land might have the information I seek…

Rumors

There is supposedly a Lost Ruined City deep in the Servos Jungle, a t’skrang called T’Skriss R’Scriimon talked to me about it.

Supposedly the Cathan and Servos Jungle T’skrang are at war again.

Some kind of strange event is going on in Parlainth.

There is a magical river in the air in the Servos Jungle. No it’s not a rainbow I swear!

UNUSUAL RACE/DISCIPLINE COMBINATIONS 1

Troll Archer

The Troll Archer is an odd and unlikely discipline/race combination because the Archer discipline relies so much on karma. Let’s first start with the basic strengths and weaknesses here.

Strengths: The troll race has some superb abilities. The best is the +4 strength modifier. This means the character gains a Step to strength and thus has a huge advantage at First and Second Circle over other archers. Second is the +2 toughness modifier. This is almost always a Step to toughness, which is actually a very important attribute to Archers. Why? Most of their talents and talent knacks require strain and with their average durability, they tend to go down when struck. Third is the +1 willpower modifier, which makes Flame Arrow more powerful, important to many players who pick archers. Heat sight is an often-overlooked advantage of a Troll. A Troll sniper at night is a powerful and dangerous adversary.

Weaknesses: No dexterity modifier. High dexterity is everything to this discipline and many other races such as Elf, Blood Elf, Windling, T’skrang, Human Cathan and Galeb-Klek all have dexterity bonuses. Perception attribute -1 is by far the worst, since this penalty hurts talents such as Mystic Aim and many other archer talents.

Knowing this, I’ve decided to make an unusual Troll archer who relies on slings rather than bows to fight. Let’s design a character using 66 Purchase Points to buy attributes.

Attributes (66 purchase points):
DEX: (15): 6/D10
STR: 15+4=(19): 8/2D6
TOU: 13+2=(15): 6/D10
PER: 14-1=(13): 6/D10
WIL: 10+1=(11): 5/D8
CHA: (11): 5/D8

This distribution is pretty good, as by Fourth Circle, you can up dexterity, toughness, and perception once, adding +1 step to dexterity and +1 Physical Defense, +1 step to toughness and +1 Death Rating, +1 Wound Threshold, +2 Unconscious Rating, and +1 Spell Defense.

At First Circle, your priorities should be Missile Weapons Mystic Aim at 2 ranks each. Yeah, I just said that. At 3 Ranks in Mystic Aim, this bonus equals that of your karma step and at 4 Ranks it surpasses it. As a Troll, the strain cost doesn’t mean as much as if you were another race too. Equipment-wise you should buy a Troll Sling, meaning you’ll be doing Step 12 damage with a rock or bullet for a while, meaning you need to maximize your armor defeating hits. True Shot shouldn’t be used too often as a Troll, as you’ll find yourself out of karma fast. A typical First and Second Circle round starts with you Mystic Aiming, adding two or three steps to your next Missile Weapons test, then using Missile Weapons with Karma. If you have 3 steps in Missile Weapons and 3 in Mystic Aim and Step 7 dexterity at Second Circle, that’s Step 13 +3 steps Karma. 16 steps is more than enough to Armor Defeat most physical defenses at Second Circle (Typical is 8 or 9).

At Third Circle we can start differentiating the character more. Flame Arrow doesn’t work with Slings, so we’ll need some talent knacks. We’d also prefer to keep our 19 Strength as the primary basis of our damage. We can use some Talent Knacks from the Magic book as a guide such as Fire Arrow.

HARD BULLET
Discipline: Archer
Talents: Flame Arrow
Rank: 3
Cost: 100 LP
Effect: The Hard Bullet talent knack allows an archer to harden a normal bullet or rock with dense earth, which adds 2 steps of damage to the sling attack. Hard bullets explode on impact and are destroyed. Using this knack requires only 1 strain and replaces the strain cost of the Flame Arrow talent.
This will increase our damage to Step 14 for 1 strain.

At Fourth Circle we buy and thread either a normal sling (Strength +6 Earthdawn Companion) or my Troll Sling (Strength +8, Minor Magical Weapons). This increases the damage even more to 14/16 for 1 strain or 16/18 for 1 strain.

We should also think about getting the Placed Shot talent knack, provided we can get something to up our Physical Defense such as Boots or Bracers to counter the talent knack’s negative effects on our physical defense (Second edition) or the enemy’s bonus to attack step (First edition) from aggression. A Placed Shot with a Hard Bullet and a fully threaded Troll Sling will do Step 21 damage for 2 strain!

At Sixth Circle, you have the brutality of Bank Shot with a sling and karma on damage. Serious Fun.

Keep in mind that some talents are extremely arrow specific, like Direction Arrow, Stopping Aim, or Call Arrow. Two strategies here, one is to ignore these talents completely (Meaning you’ll advance in your discipline faster) or to carry around a bow/crossbow and 20 arrows/bolts just to be able to use these talents. Still all in all this is an interesting character concept and worth a test play.
