PC RECAP

Pugsli’s Spy Report 8. Gone Fishing Too.

Sollus 2 Spiral Towers
Boss,
I got back in town after training in Kratas for three days to find out that Ethan left the Whip of Dis and Horse Key with a dirty human Warrior called Coga. Ethan told him that he was leaving for horror-related business, probably to rejoin Purity of the Flame. Coga was traveling with his charge, Laura, an orphan elf child that was just as unkempt as him, as well as a well-dressed troll Wizard called Noratu whose spells seemed to be inscribed on his body. Coga wanted to become a lightbearer to enter astral space and fight off Ristul at the Abyss of Aras Nehem. At Bartertown, he had met Drudge, who had told him about our quest to revive the Passions, whom we hoped would stop Ristul. Noratu had been charged by his master to protect Coga and Laura and assist in his mission. We had exchanged a shady Horror Stalker and thief for a couple of heroes, a good trade I’d say. Floranuus’ Sprint had been modified greatly with an added winch in the back, and extra fortification of the decks.

P,
So Ethan managed to escape the Curse of the Passions when you weren’t looking in on him. Great, another factor to worry about here in Haven.

Sollus 3 Tylon River
Boss,
We set out from the Spiral Towers to head out to the salvage area. We heard an ominous wave-like female voice, and then four of the crew fell out into the water, and kissed a water elemental, drowning instantly. Next, Demetrius was affected, and Ninheim Pain-ed himself to prevent being caught up in the voice. Strangely, the women and Granite were not affected. When the captain, Nemokla Vitaille, dived into the water, little Laura took the ship’s wheel to keep us on course. Granite grabbed Demetrius and prevented him from going into the drink. Smart considering, he is the only one who knows the exact location of the wreckage. And then Keth was taken in by the voice and started to drown. When I was taken up in the voice, Coga had been frozen in the water from his legs down, as Sch’ella and the captain battled in the river with the water elementals, and Noratu tried to support us with his spells. Noratu managed to save me with a Levitation spell; otherwise I would have died in the water. We managed to survive somehow, but the siren water elementals and their horror taint had lost us some valuable crewmen and left us in bad shape for our next day of work.

Sollus 4 Tylon River
Boss,
We sailed to the location of the Second Battle of House T’kambras. We decided on who should go down to the river bottom and attach the winch to the Theran vedette. The team would be Sch’ella, Demetrius, and Keth. But, they had seen something down at the river bottom… a kraken and decided to return to the surface! Thus Ninheim decided to swim down there to have some “calamari,” and Coga and Noratu as well. They came back up after a while, all badly wounded, many with blisters. It was no kraken, but some type of water horror that looked like one. It had frozen in terror most of the party except Noratu, Ninheim, and Coga, probably to feed off their fear of drowning. The new additions to the team had saved them. Ninheim was disappointed that it wasn’t a real kraken. They had attached the winch to the Theran vedette, and Granite and the riverboat crew pulled up the Theran vedette enough so that our team could explore the deck of the riverboat. We sent down Noratu, Sch’ella, Coga, and Demetrius to find the body of Omasu and his pattern items if any. The team came back up with Omasu’s body, a harp, and a rusted up chest. Noratu detected a magical trap on the chest that I disarmed easily, and then Granite smashed it open. We got a ton of gold pieces in the chest. Of course, the captain took his “commission.” Ninheim and Noratu cast some spells to preserve and clean Omasu’s body and try and get rid of the smell of decomposed flesh.

Sollus 5 Tylon River
Boss,
A water strider crossed the path of the riverboat, which the boatmen told us was an ominous sign. They are a superstitious lot, but the next thing we saw was a House K’tenshin warship that looked to be unmanned from a distance. We decided to grapple the ship and pull it over to us and then board it. We examined the bodies of the dead crew we found who appeared to have no physical wounds or bruises. There were signs of some physical damage to the ship. Nemokla told us that he could think of no other thing that could of done this than Ubyr, the legendary giant sea horror that once terrorized the Serpent River in the past. We decided to attach the ship to the Floranuus’ Sprint using the winch and tow it back to House T’kambras. They could always use more ships.
We spent the night in a port town near the Servos Jungle called Javukk. At the local tavern, we met some orks, humans, and t’skrangs. There were strange events happening in town. The t’skrang here had been having nightmares of a beautiful t’skrang woman who beckoned to them and demanded some sort of service from them. The orks and humans claimed to have seen lights on the water and heard strange clawing sounds from the old kaer on the rocky cliff. Kaer Javukk had suffered greatly in the Scourge at the hands of the physical horrors that had savagely attacked the Servos Jungle. The kaer’s mostly ork and human residents had lost many great warriors during the Scourge to fighting off these horrors. After the Scourge, they had moved their town to the south and west and established a port town, and sealed their kaer. But the people now feared that the kaer seal was broken or weakening. We decided to leave for the Spiral Towers at the morning light, and set a watch on Omasu’s body that night, hoping to protect his body from whatever had been animating the dead at Kaer Javukk.
      -P
Sollus 6 Spiral Towers
Boss,
We returned to the Spiral Towers and had a memorial service for Omasu. The whole town seemed to come out for the service; everyone from Thrynn Valori, to Shivalahala T’kambras, to Magnus Lee was there. We decided to stay at the Spiral Towers until Demetrius decided our next move. To go back to the Bone Circle in the Servos Jungle and inform Tana Lunnar of our progress or return to Javukk and investigate the disturbances there.
     -P

Strange Phenomenon.

Sollus 9 Spiral Towers
Boss,
Demetrius decided to go back to Javukk first before going back to the Bone Circle. The party sent a caravan off towards Bartertown but Granite had some additional “items” he wanted to send. When I finally got there, ork thieves were attacking them. With my help, the t’skrang guards managed to beat them back towards Kratas. I negotiated with them for the addition of Granite’s “items” and pocketed Granite’s change. You didn’t think I was helping Granite for free did you?
      -P
Sollus 10 Spiral Towers
Boss,
When I got back to the Spiral Towers, I found out about the theft of the K’tenshin riverboat and the death of the two guards yesterday while I was out saving the caravan. Their hearts had been ripped out of their chests. The ropes and chains that had bound the ship to the dock were cut clean through. Chains! It doesn’t make any sense. The Floranuus’ Sprint was in bad shape due to hull stress caused by the overuse of the winch and towing the K’tenshin ship here. They would need at least a week or so of repairs, and we didn’t want to walk to Daiche to get a riverboat there. We headed out towards Javukk on foot.
      -P
Sollus 12 Dinganni encampment
Boss,
We found a Dinganni camp as we were traveling the Tylon River shoreline. Strange, since the Dinganni are known as plainsmen. Why was a Dinganni camp close to the Tylon shore? Sch’ella, Keth, and I snuck up on the camp and investigated. We counted five men and warhorses, returned, and reported this fact to the party. Demetrius decided to parlay with them. The Dinganni were unfriendly at best, and we got little information from them. We decided to go the long way around their encampment, lest we look hostile and start an unnecessary fight.
      -P

Sollus 13 Servos Jungle
Boss,
Out of the brush and trees came two skeorxes, which laid into Noratu and Keth with ferocity unmatched by anything I’ve ever seen. They killed Noratu and knocked out Keth, attaching their tails to their necks and trying to drag off the bodies to eat them away from us. We barely managed to kill the skeorxes and save them both. Demetrius’ Last Chance Salve brought Noratu back to life.
     -P
Sollus 14 Javukk
Boss,
At Javukk, Coga and I investigated the strange appearance of a ship at the docks, flying the K’tenshin flag.  We entered the lower deck, bypassing a few security measures to get into the captain’s quarters. There we saw the ghostly visage of a t’skrang captain, and in the blink of an eye, a ghost crew was behind us. The t’skrang captain was called Szdanzo Rela’zar, and his ghost ship was called the Scaled Lady. He had been cursed some 500 years ago by a Horror who he had brought into this plane. He had asked for eternal life and power to plague the Serpent River as a pirate for all time, but had been cursed by the Horror to live life as a spirit along with his crew. The only way to break the curse and release him and his crew was to bring the Horror to him so that he could reverse the summoning. He told us that we could either join his crew, as the K’tenshin pirates we had found earlier who had tried to take his ship, or break his curse. We decided to help him. He described the Horror as looking like a female t’skrang with glowing, red eyes, and a long, powerful beak that it used to eat the hearts of sailors. If that description was accurate, the Horror could be at the Spiral Towers now! We left the ghost ship for shore, seeing its true form with holes in the hull and spider webs everywhere inside, and a mist on the outside covering a tattered flag flying a skull and crossbones motif.
As we exited the riverboat, the eerie lights reflected on the water, and a terrible sound like nails on a chalkboard was heard. The citadel walls were cracking and breaking. The Horror in Kaer Javukk was about to be freed! The townspeople of Javukk begged us to save them. We rushed to the aid of the citizens of Javukk, and scaled the cliffs leading to the Kaer. The Kaer was a combination of lighthouse citadel dome with a kaer built into the cliff overlooking the port town of Javukk. At the top of the cliff, skeletons poured out of a break in the citadel dome. We defeated the skeletons, with some being illusions rather than real ones. We rushed to the top of the lighthouse and defeated a basilisk and a Beastmaster horror who used ferocious claw and stinger to inflict pain on our Warriors. From our high vantage point, we saw the townspeople of Javukk carrying pitchforks and torches ascending the cliff and coming to the kaer. Maybe they wanted to congratulate us and seal the kaer! We decided to return to the bottom floor and talk to them. Coga went outside, and the townspeople screamed at him for killing their “brother.” They then started attacking the citadel dome. They were going to bring it down on top of us! We took a staircase leading down into the kaer proper.
We heard the sounds of shuffling and moaning undead to the south, and looked for another way, anyway, out. South was the only way though, through an army of undead. Three magicians stood behind the zombies, one holding a cord with 17 disc shaped bones on it. It was the Chain of Skulls. Ivana, an ork Nethermancer Horror, holder of the Chain of Skulls, told us to play with her new zombies or else and laughed at our fate, which was to “join” her and the people of Javukk soon. Coga ran up to her to strike her, and was immediately in searing pain. He retreated to fight the zombies. I then flew up and tried to steal the Chain of Skulls, only to feel my heart stop and stutter and the same terrible pain that had hurt Coga. I broke the spell effect and robbed the Chain of Skulls from her. Ninheim demanded the grimoire, so I gave it to him. Ninheim used the Chain of Skulls to control the zombies and turn them against their former masters. My actions seemed to enrage Ivana, who ran at us, threading and casting a spell against Ninheim and me, which failed. With Ivana close, we attacked her in full force, defeating her. With her defeated, the other two, a human Illusionist Horror, and a t’skrang Wizard Horror were easily defeated. With these three destroyed, the townspeople who had been following us and nearly at our backs, also dropped dead.
We had defeated the trap of Javukk. We left Kaer Javukk and the town of Javukk and traveled for the rest of the night. Ninheim told us he could make a Gateway to the Servos Jungle near the Spiral Towers, saving us about two or three days of travel. Despite the risks, we told him to do it the next day.
      -P
Sollus 15 Servos Jungle
Boss,
Ninheim used the Chain of Skulls to gate us near the original Bone Circle of Tana Lunnar. He and the grimoire had sustained some damage from the spell. We had a choice of going to see Tana now, or leaving for the Spiral Towers immediately to fight off the Horror we had inadvertently released there. We decided to atone for our actions now, despite being in terrible pain from the trap of Javukk and head to the Spiral Towers. First though, Ninheim gave the Chain of Skulls to the bone ghost of Tana Lunnar. It then just disappeared and reappeared without it! I guess Tana summoned it and banished it back. Anyway, we had one wish as payment. We discussed it, and decided to learn the dark secret of reviving a dead Liferock. Maybe we could save Ayodhya after all, if we could just remove the Theran Behemoth.
       -P

Sin and Punishment.

Sollus 16-18 Spiral Towers
Boss,
We traveled to the Spiral Towers to look for the Horror that had cursed Szdanzo Rela’zar. We explored the town and found no sign of the Horror or of the Floranuus’ Sprint. At the docks, we learned that the riverboat had left for Daiche for repairs that were not possible here. We rested for a few days from our ordeal at Javukk. We left for Daiche afterward on foot, since there were no other riverboats here to use.
      -P
Sollus 19 Daiche Canyon
Boss,
Ork thugs ambushed us on the road. The same ork thugs who had attacked are caravan to Bartertown earlier. They wanted vengeance on Ninheim and me. As before, I and the other Slayers easily defeated them. We killed two of their number and they rest fled like cowards towards Kratas.
       -P

Sollus 20 Daiche
Boss,
We headed for the docks of Daiche and found the Floranuus’ Sprint there.  The Boatman guards said that nothing odd had happened on the ship, and that captain Nemokla Vitaille had went to a tavern to see an ork dancer called Kiamele. Asking around Daiche, we found the tavern she was entertaining at was called the Bellowing Tusk.
Coga refused to enter the tavern with Laura, thinking it wrong to take his dependent in there.
Demetrius asked the captain if he had seen any signs of Horror activity, and he replied that he had seen none except for the death of his two men at the Spiral Towers. He told Demetrius that he had thought the Horror had left on the Ghost Ship. I responded by telling him about the tale of Szdanzo Rela’zar and what he had actually found on the Scaled Lady.
I was watching KS drool all over himself when he was invited on the stage to dance with Kiamele and turned into the happiest ork, with the dumbest grin I’ve ever seen. Noratu went outside with Demetrius to tell him about what the captain said. That’s when it happened, a terror so bad that I dropped to the ground, unable to fly. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t talk. All I saw was the thing that was once an ork dancer and singer turn into a t’skrang with an extended beak and large red eyes, that ripped out KS’s heart and ate it. KS was killed and there was nothing I could do about it. Tell D for me.
I saw Coga and Demetrius enter the tavern in a hurry and start fighting the thing. I wondered where Noratu was. The thing just kept eating hearts. Ork thugs, t’skrang pirates, all were dying, as I lay there helpless. Coga and Demetrius looked like they killed her, but the body on the ground was that of a t’skrang Boatman she had switched places with. Then she threw a green ball of flame at me, and I felt its searing heat burn me all over. Ninheim broke the terror and freed me with from it with a Dispel Magic spell.
I gave out a mighty laugh, maneuvered, and surprised the Horror’s backside. Noratu had returned by this point and was casting spells to counter the Horror’s powers. It was shifting the damage we gave it back to us. It had killed Keth, and nearly everyone in the tavern, even the Bartender, except Nemokla Vitaille and the rest of our party. It tried to trip Sch’ella by pulling a tablecloth out from under her, and then it became a Flying Carpet.
She flew over to Nemokla, and savagely attacked him. Sch’ella, Granite, and Coga all took blows for him, and Sch’ella lay there dead. I gave her a Last Chance Salve, but a Damage Shift killed her again that we were unable to revive her from with a second Last Chance Salve. She died nobly. I just wonder why an Ishkarat-born Boatman would save a captain of House T’kambras. Perhaps killing the t’skrang Horror was worth her life, so that it would never plague her House. Or maybe she felt a duty to a captain she had traveled with so many times. I just never expected her to do something like this. D would have been so proud of her, like I am. Her final act was worthy of a Slayer.
The battle continued on as she flew on her flying carpet until it unraveled. Unable to damage shift to us because of Noratu’s Counterspell, she had done it to the carpet instead. She summoned a second carpet on which Noratu cast Counterspell, to prevent her damage shift. Unable to shift her damage, she tried to paralyze some of us with a spell, but it didn’t stop the Warriors and spellcasters. With her damage shift effectively neutralized, we managed to kill her, and save Nemokla Vitaille.
We grabbed the bodies of our slain comrades, the Horror, and the t’skrang Boatman under Nemokla. Security in Daiche is minimal, but I’m pretty sure those ork thugs and other t’skrang pirates                have friends who are going to want an explanation for this mess, and I’m not sure a Horror ripped out their hearts and ate them is going to work. I think I’ll be a happy windling if I never have to step foot in this town ever again.
We went to the docks, got on the Floranuus’ Sprint, and headed for the Spiral Towers.
      -P
Sollus 21 Javukk
Boss,
We sailed to the port of Javukk, and waited for nightfall and the reappearance of the Ghost Ship, the Scaled Lady. When it returned to the surface from its watery grave at the bottom of the Tylon River, we made our way inside to deliver the body of the Horror. Szdanzo Rela’zar performed the ritual to banish the Horror called Druistadt by Szdanzo Rela’zar from this plane. We left just before the end, since the end of the curse would also sink the Scaled Lady for good.
We saw a light on at the citadel and investigated. The light quartz had been left in from last time, and we didn’t see anything else out of the ordinary, so we returned to the Spiral Towers.
                                                                                                                                                                   -P
Sollus 22-30 Spiral Towers
Boss,
We held a funeral for Sch’ella and KS. I sent a caravan with KS’s possessions to Bartertown to be given to his family or the Slayers later minus the Horse Key. We stayed in town for a week, resting from our ordeal with Druistadt and training for our next leg of the journey in the Delaris Mountains. I trained Demetrius to Third Circle Swordmaster. If he keeps this rate of advancement up, he’ll be Fifth Circle Swordmaster in no time.
We are lucky that we didn’t lose Granite or Ninheim, since we need them to get the keys. Still, that means the Slayers will need to find us another ork and t’skrang, possibly from the Revivers of the Passions.

RUMORS

Spiral Towers

There are rumors of stepped up House K’tenshin activity all along the Tylon River. They may be planning another attempt at taking over the Tylon River from House T’kambras, Scavians, and Daiche privateers. The real question is if they will try a military or economic approach.

We heard that someone hit it big on a recent dive on the Tylon River.

There are rumors of a Ghost Ship along the Tylon River.

Javukk

I don’t understand the dreams about the t’skrang female. I feel she wants something though and wants us to follow her.

The dead walk at night in Kaer Javukk! I can hear them scratching at the walls of the kaer and the glass of the dome seal. They are trying to get out!

The strange lights reflecting on the water kind of remind me of a lighthouse in their intensity and frequency.

Daiche

Kiamele is one of the finest ork women I’ve ever seen. She curves in all the right places, with that fiery red hair, green skin with nary a mar, and eyes that shine like blue crystal. And those tusks are perfect! And the way she belly dances and sings shows off her great body and her gentle voice. What tavern is she at tonight?

There have been a lot of ill people in Daiche recently, many of them complain about being tired. Some are unable to fulfill their ship duties.

That Floranuus’ Sprint is one beat-up ship. It looks like it went through hell, with hull stresses and fractures that I’ve never seen before.

NEW CHARACTER BIOS 10

COGA (SHAWN)

Race: Human
Discipline: Warrior
Circle: Fifth
Homeland: Landis
Passion: Lochost
Character Background: Born in Landis to an elven mother and human father. In 1517 TH, when the Therans invaded Landis, Coga and his family including his elven mother and sister, fled away from his own human father and elven brother, who had joined the Therans as mercenaries, as well as Landis. They refused to become slaves to the Therans or live in a country occupied by them, and were ashamed of the actions of their kin. Coga hid his mother and sister and became a Warrior in Landis, ashamed of the actions of his Swordmaster father and brother, and tried to help the people of Landis flee to Cara Fahd. Coga fled to Urupa hoping that the elven/human mixed sector of Liandrill and Zenicce would provide a good place to hideout from his father who wanted to get wife and daughter back, and his elven brother who hated the fact that he was an elf and wanted to be human and wanted to kill Coga since he actually got to be human. Coga worked for a wealthy, elven Weaponsmith as a repairer of weapons and armor, and his family lived at his home with his daughter Laura. As the Abyss at Aras Nehem expanded, Coga went to Malvari at the School for Adepts seeking help for his quest to become a Lightbearer and do something about the corruption as well as further training in his Discipline. Coga suggested that he become a Lightbearer and enter Astral Space to fight the corruption directly. Malvari funded a caravan to go to Bartertown and tasked his student Noratu to accompany him. The elven Weaponsmith had fallen ill to a wasting disease recently, and on his deathbed, asked Coga to take care of his daughter Laura, which Coga agreed to do, before the death of the elven Weaponsmith. Coga redirected some of the resources from buying guards to paying the way for his family to move from Urupa to Bartertown, against the orders of Malvari. As a result of this, the caravan was waylaid by the Skull Whargs near Bartertown and was destroyed, with Coga, Noratu, Coga’s family, and Laura fleeing to Bartertown. They met Drudge in Bartertown, who told Coga to leave his family in the care of Lilandra Silvertongue whom they could work for to earn their keep. Drudge told them about the Reviver of the Passions as well as the party and the quest to find the nine Keys of Heroes of the nine Name-giver races to unlock the Heart of Heroes and wish to free the Passions. Drudge also told Coga alone, about a Lightbearer called Isam Derr in Throal. Coga went to Throal to speak with Isam Derr as Noratu researched the quest at the Throal library. Isam Derr told Coga that in order to become a Lightbearer he must do a great deed to become recognized by the order and never use Blood Magic. Knowing of the quest to restore the Passions, Coga decided to seek out the party on this quest hoping to be recognized by the Lightbearers. Thus Noratu, Coga, and Laura set out for Cellesis, where the party was last known to be. They coincidentally found the party at the Spiral Towers, and joined the quest.

Long-term Goals: Become a Lightbearer. Stop the expansion of the Abyss at Aras Nehem. Free the Passions. Return to Landis and rid it of the Theran scum.

NORATU WARBUCKS (TED)

Race: Troll
Discipline: Wizard
Circle: Sixth
Homeland: Urupa
Passion: Erendis, Rashomon, and Vestrial
Character Background: Noratu was born in Otosk in Urupa. A rich human Wizard called Malvari from the Liandrill and Zenicce sector whose main source of income is a lucrative School of Adepts, initiated him into the Wizard Discipline, and trained him to Fifth Circle. A human Warrior named Coga came to the school seeking help for his quest to become a Lightbearer and do something about the expanding Abyss at Aras Nehem. Malvari assigned Noratu to his quest, and paid for a caravan to Bartertown. Thus Noratu, Coga, and Laura set out for Cellesis, where the party was last known to be. They coincidentally found the party at the Spiral Towers, and joined the quest. At the Spiral Towers, Magnus Lee trained Noratu to Sixth Circle Wizard.

Long-term Goals: Discover new types of magic. Stop the expansion of the Abyss at Aras Nehem. Free the Passions.

CHARACTER GRAVEYARD 7

Keth Swiftblade (Eric) was slain by Druistadt by having his heart ripped out and eaten.

Sch’ella (NPC) was killed by Druistadt twice, by covering a blow for Nemokla Vitaille and a fatal Damage Shift.

Character Retirement Home 4

Ethan Horrorsbane left the party and headed to Daiche to sail to the Floating Isle and establish a spy organization to look in on Elarin’s activities.

Unorthodox Earthdawn Campaigns

Obviously one of the more unusual campaigns that seem pretty common is the drake campaign. Of course, the high Attributes, high powers, spells, and usual Sixth Circle in a Discipline makes these types of characters extremely powerful and it’s hard to challenge such characters effectively. Dragonkin with their +1 Perception and Willpower Attributes, Low-Light Vision, and Astral-Sensitive Sight, as well as the base Name-giver race tend to make them powerful, but not anywhere near as powerful as drakes, which is why a dragon-orientated campaign with these characters tends to be easier to balance and provide challenges for. Of course, the problem of drake and dragonkin campaigns is that the powerful patron of the party pretty much decides their objectives for them, which can lead to players feeling railroaded.

Just because you are dead, doesn’t mean the campaigns over! A dead party can become ally spirits with Circle = Strength rating. Since ally spirits are natural to the netherealms, this naturally leads to exploration of the netherealms and is a great way to explore strange new planes and areas far removed from the normal Barsaive setting. The end goal of such a campaign should be the revival of the characters or returning to Barsaive and finishing the party’s unfinished business.

There is also the zero to hero style of campaigning. The heroes start as mundane characters, possibly guard veterans for a nice little power boost, and through a string of heroic deeds to protect their master become noticed by adepts and become initiated into Disciplines after much hard work and training. Just becoming First Circle alone is an adventure in itself! If making a Guard Veteran character, the character starts with 16 General skills + the original 6 skill points to spend on Languages, Knowledge, and Artisan skills, the Spellcasting skill at 1 rank for free, a magically active lucky charm, and the natural ability of the Guards Veterans to detect deception.
