Return to 50 Fathoms Recap 16

June 30, 2017 @7:00-10:30 P.M.

< WARNING SPOILERS FOR 50 FATHOMS AHEAD MATEY!>

DAY 95, SCENE 1
PLACE: TORATH-KA, THE TEETH
WEATHER: SUNNY
TIME OF DAY: DUSK

Stripe used his spyglass and found sharks infesting the water near the sunken Carcanus. Red Pirate Roberts turned the ship wheel and they headed towards the crashed ship...

[Chessie started the session by playing the Enemy card.]

With so many sharks, the group discussed how to draw them off, including throwing in Jim Black and Stripe. So Stripe went down below and slashed poor Jim Black across the throat. Unk threw a wild punch below and missed him after witnessing the murder.

"Useless to feed a man with no hands, I gave him the mercy that you should have given him to begin with. Let him serve us in death the way he couldn't in life."--Stripe.

Stripe brought Jim Black above deck and threw him overboard to draw off the sharks as bait, but they seemed to go into a blood frenzy.

Horventerous and Stripe dived down to the Wreck of the Carcanus.

They've spotted you Stripe!

Horventerous got to the ships sails and started cutting them free. Meanwhile Stripe whiffed at a shark and then got eaten by four frenzied sharks.

Spear is a little off to the left.

Nom Nom Stripe

When Horventerous freed the sails, the sharks heard a ping sound and turned from Stripe's skeleton stripped of flesh.

Horventerous grabbed a rock and threw it. The sharks ran toward the new sound and thrashed in the sands, seeking the source of the noise.

[Andrew played Mermaids which allows a free Smarts trick.]

Where is the food at in this sand?

After realizing there was nothing in the sands, the sharks turned up and pursued Horventerous. Horventerous got to the surface as the sharks continued to ascend. Unk attached his hook to the bulwark and swung on his rope to try and grab him, but missed. Smithers grabbed the rope and pulled Horventerous out of the water just as the sharks surfaced.

Horventerous with a 51 inch swimming start as the sharks turn up 14 inches.

The group rested for the night and Unk recovered from his fatigue and a wound.

DAY 96
PLACE: TORATH-KA, THE TEETH
WEATHER: SUNNY
TIME OF DAY: MORNING-NOON

Red Pirate Roberts directed the crew to put up the sharkskin sails before heading to The Gullet.

DAY 96
PLACE: TORATH-KA, THE TEETH
WEATHER: SUNNY
TIME OF DAY: NOON-DUSK

Red Pirate Roberts navigated to the wreck of the Flying Festoon in The Gullet. Her sailors grabbed a Green Dolphin Figurehead and attached it to the ship. They then sailed through The Gullet to the Torath-Ka Sea and made a bit of progress east before weighing anchor.

DAY 100
PLACE: KIERAN SEA
WEATHER: SUNNY
TIME OF DAY: DUSK

Red Pirate Roberts spotted a frigate and galleon moving west. She attempted to pursue them but they got away. Unk recovered another wound with bed rest.

DAY 102
PLACE: KIERAN SEA
WEATHER: OVERCAST
TIME OF DAY: NOON

Red Pirate Roberts spotted a junk and approached the vessel. The junk put up a pirate flag. Unk put up a British East India Company flag, that of the H.M.S. Selerity. The junk seemed to pick up speed and race towards them after that flag was raised.

Complication for the Rojo Cazadora sends them careening right as the junk fires at long range.

Red Pirate Roberts nearly hit a shoal in the water but then turned right away from the hazard. The junk fired their cannons but missed their shots with the sudden turn and change of direction.

Red Pirate Roberts maneuvered her ship to the left flank of the junk and Smithers fired a cannon. The pirate captain adjusted course after the cannonball ricocheted off the port side of the vessel. But this course adjustment exposed the ship's rudder and Manuel cast bolt for the first time. The massive screaming arc of water smashed into the vessel's rudder, killing the captain instantly, and left a huge hole in the aft hull of the ship. The ship suddenly crashed into the shoals that Red Pirate Roberts had avoided and the ship's crew and cannons flew off the upper deck of the ship while those below drowned. A few survivors hung on to planks and drifted away.

Red Pirate Roberts ordered Joseph to salvage the junk.

"But C'pn, we ain't got any lumber!"--Ship Carpenter Joseph
"Strip the upper deck! I will have that ship!"--Red Pirate Roberts

"If this gambit fails, we will be adrift at sea. Are you sure C'pn?"--Ship Carpenter Joseph
"You have your orders, Quartermaster. Carry them out."--Red Pirate Roberts

The crew chopped down their own upper deck and handed the planks to Joseph who repaired the junk's bottom hull as it teetered precariously on shoals and threatened to sink completely to the bottom of the Kieran Sea. After the repairs were made, they latched their vessel to the junk and headed for the nearest Kieran island having to go a long way in a counterclockwise manner due to the rudder only being able to turn right.

[Ellen played Convenient Repairs.]

DAY 102-111
PLACE: KIERAN SEA
WEATHER: SUNNY

The group spent the next nine days moored at the island. They stripped the Rojo Cazadora of everything and used the lumber from below deck and then cut down trees on the island to repair the junk. The crew started to whisper of mutiny as cabin fever started to set in as day after day was grueling work and more and more damnable crackers made morale plummet.

DAY 112-113
PLACE: TIMIN
WEATHER: RAINY

Red Pirate Roberts sailed the repaired junk west to Timin. In Timin, she paid the crew, bought provisions and cannonballs, a hold full of lumber, and recruited four Masaquani sailors. The entire crew caroused. The men toasted Jim Black, a man who didn't deserve his fate, and cursed Stripe for his treachery, toasting the sharks that ate him. Unk bought a parrot that he named Nick Nack following Masaquani naming traditions with a Red Man's spelling.

DAY 114
PLACE: KIERAN SEA
WEATHER: OVERCAST
TIME OF DAY: AFTERNOON

Red Pirate Roberts was forced to turn back to the island to hide out, finding a black ship patrolling to the northeast of Timin.

DAY 117
PLACE: COAKER MOUNTAINS
WEATHER: OVERCAST
TIME OF DAY: DUSK

Red Pirate Roberts used the weather and lighting conditions to hide the junk from the eyes of the fortress at the tip of a peninsula and land the ship in a fjord beyond their line of sight.

She decided to take Smithers and the four Spaniards, Horventerous, Domingo, Unk, and Suzu on land leaving Joseph, Louis, Rosetta, Natsu Nara, and the four Masaquani recruits behind at the ship.

DAY 118
PLACE: COAKER MOUNTAINS
WEATHER: OVERCAST
TIME OF DAY: AFTERNOON

The group found four humans covered in ash and soot with tattered clothing with metal shackles with broken chains around their wrists and ankles. They carried muskets and cutlasses. They parleyed with the group, noticing they were not Masaquani. They wanted to leave the island and Unk's parrot (with the Big Mouth Hindrance) said that they had a ship. The group negotiated with them and they agreed to help them with their quests for a bottle of air from the peak of a Coaker Mountain and to rescue Luis if they were granted safe passage. When Horventerous brought up Tomas de Orinjo, they mentioned that their now deceased guards said he had just been caught in Paltos. The group made it to the nadir of a mountain and began to climb...

MAPS

I used our blue tablecloth for the seas of Caribdus this week. I used the center four map sections of DramaScape's Sunken Ship as the Wreck of the Carcanus. This removes the mines on the other map sections that makes it look like more of a modern map. Sunken Ship works well in 50 Fathoms for any of the wreckage scenarios.

MINIATURES

Tri-folds used are from the 50 Fathoms Figure Flat Pack PDF and a metal 50 Fathoms miniature by Pinnacle Entertainment Group. Heroclix by WizKids are used for some figures. The figure flat for Unk is from Deadly Missions Mercenaries by Grey Matter Games. Ships used include one from Red Rose Tea and Letters of Marque by Fantasy Flight Games.
