For #RPGaDay2019, the thirtieth word prompt is Connection.
Your connections and contacts often have a major effect on game play. In #Earthdawn, Shawn played Drudge Tarcke and created his own Swordmaster Guild in the Slayers in Bartertown, dedicated to protecting Bartertown as well as Barsaive from the internal threat of the Horrors and external threats like the Theran Empire. After the conclusion of the ten year campaign, the Slayers became a major force in the quest to save Cara Fahd and all of Barsaive to complete the Heart of Heroes quest.
In #50Fathoms, we had Reggie as a Contact and he helped out a couple of times. We prevented an assassination attempt on Bruno's life and became friends with him early in the campaign and were friends of the British East India Company although we had to avoid Admiral Duckworth like the plague as we were pirates who had destroyed a Kieran cutter and stolen 5 iron holds full of goods from a Kieran merchant vessel in order to build Grof's ironclad.
In #DeadlandstheFlood, connections had a major impact as we had both an Agent in Wyn and two Rangers in Hitoshi and Loyall. They would often use their connections to gain more requisitions and bettter gear. Wyn even had a love connection at Smith and Robards which he used to get more ammo even though he was quite Harrowed by that point when Kevin played Love Interest.
In #Shaintar, the group was part of an organization to protect the Wildlands called Grayson's Gray Rangers. They would often use their connections to the military to requisition more equipment before missions. The rangers also provided them half the food for their journeys expecting them to use survival to gain the other half.
In #NecessaryEvil,
Baron de Villain's connections as the leader of Lemuria allowed them to
use the Atlantean hybrid Lemuria as a base for a time.
In #Returnto50Fathoms, the biggest connections that the group has are to the Spanish Guild through Ricardo Montagne and the Coalition, a group of pirates who promised to guard Brigandy Bay. Through their alliances, they are on the cusp of attacking the British Navy and Baltimus. Which may be their only chance of getting the diary of Byron Baltimus.

Pugsli’s Spy Report 16. Sacrifice.
Sollus 17-Sollus 20, 1521 TH Bartertown to Urupa
Boss,
We boarded Roland’s airship, and flew from
Bartertown to Urupa.
-P
Sollus 20, 1521 TH Urupa
Boss,
By the Passions. The cloud of dark
corruption spans the entire northeastern horizon near Urupa. It’s almost too
late for this town. If we don’t find the names of the remaining heroes soon…
After landing in Urupa, we went to the
Liandrill and Zenicce section to the School of Adepts to meet with Noratu’s
master Malvari. The coward put away his belt buckle before entering the school.
I suppose the old saying is true, “A servant cannot serve two masters, or that
servant will honor the one and offend the other.” Well I am offended. An
admission that you needed help while away from your master a long time is not a
sign of weakness.
We entered the massive School of Adepts.
Devoid of the usual bustle of students and teachers, the empty hallways leading
to Malvari’s office echoed as we walked. Once at Malvari’s desk, Coga and
Ninheim reported what had happened since they had last seen him, including the
fate of Malvari’s caravan, and how they came to be cursed and join our quest.
Malvari then informed us about the current events in Urupa, including the
pirates plaguing the docks, the bizarre kidnappings of children in Urupa, and
the evacuations of most civilians from the city of Urupa. He asked Noratu how
he would combat the cloud of corruption if we were forced to enter it. Noratu
responded that a spell matrix or spell matrix object could be used to filter
the corruption at the cost of the matrix. Malvari grinned at the cleverness of
his apprentice, and gave us all spell matrix objects. Of course, Salishi and
Laura could not thread the objects, so we arranged for them to stay with
Malvari at the School of Adepts. Malvari surprisingly agreed quickly. I can
only imagine it must be lonely for him with all the students and teachers
evacuated.
As night approached, we decided to
reconnoiter the area to look for information about Urupa and the cultists. From
the intelligence we gathered, we learned that the city was split into sections
based on racial distribution. From our previous battles, we knew that the
cultists were predominantly humans and orks. So we decided to disguise
ourselves as cultists in gray and black cloaks and investigate the human and
elven section of Liandrill and Zenicce and the ork Ironclaws section to try and
find out where their prisoners were held, especially if we could capture some
of the cultists. Coga and Ninheim
investigated Liandrill and Zenicce and I followed them. The rest of the party
followed by Luke left for the Ironclaws section. Coga and Ninheim made contact
with the cultists who were planning a daring nighttime raid of the School of
Adepts to kill Malvari and kidnap Salishi and Laera for sacrifices. Coga and
Ninheim joined them on the night raid rather than attempting to capture them
since if they captured new sacrifices, they could lead us to where the rest of the
prisoners were held. The cultists used ropes and grappling hooks to rappel up
the walls and enter the School of Adepts through the window. Once they
infiltrated the building, the cultists captured Laura and Salishi, and Coga and
Ninheim “killed” Malvari, who used illusory spells to appear dead.
The cultists continued to Central Urupa,
where they took an unusual bathroom break to deface the Temples of the
Passions. It took all my will to not kill them all for their impudence.
We continued to the edge of the Ironclaws
section, where the rest of the group and the cultists and infiltrators met. The
cultists were immediately suspicious of the new group for a number of reasons.
For one thing their sudden appearance after the mission’s start, the size of the
group, and the implausibility of two groups of initiate cultists joining on the
same night of such an important mission. The cultists were not convinced by
Laira or Zangetsu’s claims of being cultists, although Noratu managed to
convince them he was a cultist. The cultists drew blades and captured Laira and
Zangetsu. I used the confusion to enter a back alley and form a new plan with
Luke. I hoped that Coga would explain the new plan to the second group who
probably still believed the plan was to capture the cultists and interrogate
them for information, as neither Luke or I could reveal ourselves if our plan
was to succeed, especially since Ninheim was fully convinced he was a cultist
for the moment and his actions may be considered hostile by the party.
The group of cultists, pretending cultists,
and prisoners were led further into the ork Ironclaws section, where they were
met by a group of ork cultists. The ork cultists led them to the troll Otosk
section, where the shadow drakkar was standing by in a hidden cliff face. The
prisoners were placed in individual cell rooms, each guarded by two cultists,
as the ork Sky Raiders prepped the airship to transport the prisoners to their
secret prison facility.
Laira and Zangetsu tried to escape; meaning
Coga hadn’t informed them of the updated plan. Ninheim responded to Falcos
breaking his manacles by dispelling him. He assisted the cultists with spells
and helped them to retie Laira and Zangetsu. Laira was furious at Ninheim for
betraying them. I can relate. No one wants to be taken prisoner, and based on
the Duke’s last wishes after his death; I can only imagine how possessive he
was of Laira in life. And who knows where Ninheim’s loyalties really lie?
-P
Sollus 20, 1521 TH Urupa response dated Riag 16, 1521 TH
P,
That’s what it feels like to be face-to-face
with the truth of what you are fighting for. We all face that moment in the
quest to be true heroes. Do not falter in your quest.
I am also offended by Noratu’s actions. He
will find little aid from the Slayers from now on. If you find no pride in
wearing the belt buckle, then you have no business wearing it in the first
place. You know what to do.
Not a bad plan, and not a bad adaptation to
a change in on the ground conditions.
Do not expect a Horror cult to respect their
only true enemy.
I don’t trust Ninheim/Heimnin one bit
myself. But where else are we going to find a dragonkin to go along with our
crazy plan?
-R
Sollus 21-23, 1521 TH Aras Sea
Boss,
We left Urupa at dawn, and flew around the
corruptive cloud over the Aras Sea, landing at a small alcove to rest, before
continuing to a hidden mountain prison facility.
-P
Sollus 23, 1521 TH Prison Facility
Boss,
Once we landed, Luke and I leapt into
action. Coming out of the shadows, we slew the cell guards, broke the prisoners
free, and gave the prisoners back their stolen gear. We then went up to the top
deck of the airship and fought the ork Sky Raiders and remaining cultists. It
was a tough fight, and in the end it seemed that Ninheim’s foul spell won the
battle for us and broke the formations and morale of the opposing Sky Raiders.
Individually or in small groups, they were easy for Luke and I to pick them
off.
After taking out the arrayed forces at the
airship dock, we proceeded to explore the first level. Luke and I watched the
group’s back from the shadows while they entered the barracks, defense points,
and warehouses on the first floor. We only had to step in once to help out when
an additional surge of cultists into the hallways occurred. Ninheim got hurt
badly in the first two battles, so he retreated to the airship. After defeating
all of the remaining ork Sky Raiders and cultists on the first floor, we
prepared to take the stairs to the basement level.
As we descended to the basement level,
shadow hunters surrounded and ambushed us from the shadows of the torchlights.
Zangetsu and his bone walker, Sam, caught the brunt of the attack. We managed
to dispel or defeat them all. Luke and I watched the group’s back as they
entered the kitchen and pantry, food growth area, well and water storage area,
forge, armory, and prayer room to Ristul. We proceeded further into the
basement level and I unlocked a room with a bone spirit in a bone circle. While
the bone spirit fought Zangetsu when he entered the room, more cultists
ambushed us from around a corner and attacked Laira. We defeated them and
Noratu dispelled the bone spirit. While walking down to explore the other room,
more cultists attacked us from around the corner, and in the midst of combat,
Zangetsu tried to open a locked door, and the door let out a poisonous, dark
cloud. The cloud hit all of us, before it was dispelled. Luke and I finished
off the remaining cultists and I disarmed and unlocked the trapped door. We
found a small wooden chest reinforced with iron bars, which I unlocked,
revealing a Nethermancer grimoire. Laira found some papers in his desk about
the Nethermancer summoning Ristul and some of the specifics of the sacrifice to
Ristul including how he was going to use his powers to protect them from the
corruption until they arrived at the Abyss where they would be sacrificed. I
unlocked a couple of doors to barracks, where the group found a couple of
weapon lockers with some forged broadswords.
We proceeded to a large, reinforced, iron,
double door that I unlocked. The door led to a large prison with over twenty
cells, two with griffins, one with Lysander, and four cells containing Coga’s
family guarded by over fifteen cultists and Ristul’s Nethermancer priest. Coga
asked for him to release his family. The priest told him that if he wanted them
released he’d have to go through him. So Coga glided over there and stabbed him
with his tri-spear. The priest told him that if he were going to Ristul, he’d
take his family with him, and emitted a black cloud enveloping him and his
family. Someone dispelled the cloud and I briefly saw Coga fighting with four
cultists and the Nethermancer before the cloud returned. The rest of us were fighting
the cultists trying to get to Coga and the prisoners before it was too late. I
heard the priest fall and he told Coga that it didn’t matter, that his master
had already chosen another. The cloud was dispelled permanently, and we mopped
up the remaining cultists. Coga’s whole
family, even his brother and father who helped with the kidnapping were
imprisoned. I released Coga’s mother and sister, and Lysander with the
Nethermancer’s keys to the prison.
According to Coga’s father and brother, they
joined the Nethermancer to kidnap Coga’s mother and sister to stop them from
being killed by the Ristular, since according to the cultists and notes found
in the Nethermancer’s room they were not important to the sacrifice. When they
later tried to escape with Coga’s mother and sister using their griffins, the
Nethermancer caught them and threw them into jail. They asked us how they were
going to pilot the shadow drakkar without any knowledge of Air Sailing. Laira
told them that she could summon up the spirits of Air Sailors. Of course, what
would happen to us if they dissipated at the helm of the ship? Coga could not
bring himself to let them rot in jail, or kill his father and brother despite
their misdeeds, and I released them. Coga and Zangetsu set aside 300 gold
pieces to send Coga’s mother and sister across the Aras Sea, and Coga’s father
and brother promised not to follow them, seeming not to care as long as they
were out of Barsaive.
We returned to the shadow drakkar and found
Ninheim to be missing. We heard a loud roar and Coga sent his eagle and Laira
her spirits to investigate. After locating Ninheim, the bird and spirits
returned and Coga’s father piloted the airship to his location on the cliffs.
Ninheim had killed a Brithan, skinned it, and had started a fire to cook it.
Ninheim flew to the ship with the Brithan’s meat in tow.

Sollus 23, 1521 TH Prison Facility response dated Riag 22, 1521 TH
P,
It is dishonorable to kill a man rotting in
a prison cell in cold blood vengeance no matter their misdeeds. Coga made the
correct choice as a Slayer, especially if he really wants to be a Lightbearer
some day.
-R
Sollus 24-26, 1521 TH Aras Sea to Urupa
Boss,
With
the help of Coga’s father and brother as captain and mate, as well as Ninheim’s
and Laira’s spirits, we managed to fly the shadow drakkar to Urupa.

For #RPGaDay2019, the twenty-ninth word prompt is Evolve.
As Tellah left Caribdus and left for Earth with Kirel, his body changed. He grew an additional set of claw appendages and became a strange mix of Kraken and Scurillian as he evolved as he moved between the two worlds. He took on a new name, Davy Jones, and spoke of a locker under the oceans that bares his name and pointed to its key, the one on a necklace around his neck. Which was actually the Key of Destiny. And if we ever play #SolomonKane, Tellah and Kirel will appear again.

Pugsli’s Spy Report 15. Journey into the Heart 2.
Mawag 30-Gahmil 6, 1521 TH Midland Trading Post
Boss,
We
returned to the Midland Trading Post and handed over Britham Boyhan to Gurt. As
a result of Britham’s supposed Throal connections, a messenger was sent to
Throal to confirm them and he was detained rather than executed. Nearly a third
of all trade to the Midland Trading Post came from Tansiarda, so Gurt cannot
afford to anger Throal.
Coga asked Gurt to help Granite restart the
Liferock Rebellion. Gurt refused the request. Coga was disappointed, but needs
to understand that Gurt’s finances have been devastated by the recent lack of
trade and that Theran spies are everywhere in northeastern Barsaive. Supporting
Granite could get Gurt killed and retired adventurers rarely wish to take such
risks. Gurt is simply in no position either financial or militarily to aid
Granite.
-P
Gahmil 7-13, 1521 TH
Boss,
We
traveled from the Midland Trading Post to the Heart Wood Palace.
-P
Gahmil 14-20, 1521 TH Heart Wood Palace
Boss,
We were given 350 silver pieces for
successfully removing the obstacles to trade and given access to the library.
Noratu found out that the name of the first elven hero was the first elf,
Caynreth. The Heart Wood council gave us a second mission, 350 silver pieces
per delivery of messages to Gurt at the Midland Trading Post, Torgak at Haven,
and the council of dwarven magicians and engineers at Tansiarda. After
defeating a great form wood elemental, I figured that they were giving us an
easy mission with a high silver reward to make up for the relatively low cost
of the last mission. We accepted the mission of course. I’ve been having
trouble finding a Thief adept to train me of late.
-P
Messengers for Hire
Gahmil 21-27, 1521 TH
Boss,
We
traveled from the Heart Wood Palace to the Midland Trading Post and delivered
the message to Gurt for 350 silver pieces. Noratu decided to carry the letters
to Haven and Tansiarda as well.
-P
Gahmil 28-Holiday 4, 1521 TH
Boss,
We traveled from the Midland Trading Post to
Haven and delivered the message to Torgak for 350 silver pieces.
-P
Holiday 5-Raquas 13, 1521 TH Haven
Boss,
Noratu researched information at Haven’s
libraries and information dealers. Coga asked Torgak if there were any missions
available. Torgak told us about a bounty mission for ork scorchers that were
recently troubling Haven. He offered 70 silver pieces for ork scorchers dead or
alive, payment on delivery of captured orks or dead orks. Torgak requested that
we capture the horses since he needed them for a new caravan to the Midland
Trading Post. Coga left with Laira
L’Zoril, Aylaa, and a human mercenary by the name of Zangetsu to hunt down the
ork scorchers as I left to try and find a Thief adept in Haven to train me
again. I’ve been having trouble finding a Thief adept to train me anywhere here
in northeastern Barsaive; I was hoping Haven at least would have one but no
luck. The group returned with six ork heads and six riding horses to collect
their bounty.
As of yet I have been unable to get any real
information about Zangetsu. All my sources of information point to him being a
mercenary who has been operating in Haven for a month or so who came up to
Haven on the Old Theran Road. He seems to be interested in Laira, for power or
for lust I have yet to ascertain. The two of them decided to enter Parlainth
looking for trouble. I left with them to keep an eye on Zangetsu. I don’t trust
him with Laira. Trouble found us in the form of a group of ogre mercenaries
working for Charcoalgrin. I’ve never seen the Unforgiveables this far out of
the Vault before or for that matter Unforgiveables with silver badges instead
of clay. The ogres called us trespassers in Charcoalgrin’s territory, and then
Laira attacked them with her blue blades of death. The ogre died, and his twin
appeared to avenge him. We fought off all seven of the ogre twins before
retreating to Haven. I suppose Charcoalgrin is now expanding out from the
Vaults since Twiceborn left. It looked like they were protecting a pit that
they found in the Smalls for some strange reason. I wonder why? But without the
rest of the group, going into the catacombs would be foolish.
Just before we left Haven, Noratu hired a
dwarf scribe Named Salishi to keep his appointments in exchange for a monthly
fee for his services and travel expenses and the rights to publish an adventure
log of our adventures. Zangetsu and Salishi went shopping for equipment, and
Salishi effortlessly coaxed out his story. Zangetsu is a mercenary from J’Pang
who has worked with the Therans all over J’Pang, Thera, and Barsaive while he
attempted to find his soulsword in their territories. He may be a Theran spy,
like that other Spirit Swordmaster Risudo. It seems I was right to keep an eye
on him. For the moment, Laira seems to have him on a tight leash, so I don’t
think he is an immediate threat.
-P
Response to Raquas 13, 1521 TH letter dated Raquas 30, 1521 TH
P,
Zangetsu
you say? My Landis informants tell me that he worked with the Therans picking
through the ruins of Vivane and more than likely was working with the Therans
at Haven picking through the ruins of Parlainth. Keep a close eye on that
Theran collaborator, and watch your back.
-R
Raquas 14-19, 1521 TH Old Theran Road
Boss,
We left Haven for the Midland Trading Post.
Bounty Hunters ambushed us on the road near the thick jungles near Parlainth.
They were after Laira G’nonsely aka Laira L’Zoril who had killed a high-ranking
Duke of Shosara. They were here to kill her and collect the bounty. The Bounty
Hunters told us to leave if we wanted to live, as this was no business of ours.
We refused. They attacked us with efficiency unseen in our foes recently. They
had elf Nethermancers counter the spells of Laira and Zangetsu, elf Warriors
and skeletons to take the brunt of our attacks, a deadly elf Woodsman or Archer
with a hunting dog and falcon targeting Laira and Falcos, and attendant
krilworms familiars that alerted the hidden Nethermancers if a foe approached.
All of a sudden, the Nethermancers went on the offensive and I felt my insides
scramble and then my ribs splinter. I fell to the ground dead after seeing a
hand flicker in the surrounding jungle. I woke up three days later. Salishi,
the dwarf scribe, used my last Chance Salve on me and saved my life. Noratu
used a spell to stop the opponent’s offensive spells, and they retreated to
hunt Laira another day after seeing the battle turn against them.
-P
Raquas 20, 1521 TH Midland Trading Post

We arrived at the Midland Trading Post and

the journey to Tansiarda.
-P
Raquas 21-26, 1521 TH Old Theran Road
Boss,
Fortunately for me, we made our way through
the Caucavik Mountains without any trouble.
-P
Raquas 27, 1521 TH Tansiarda
Boss,
We arrived at Tansiarda and delivered the
message to the local council for our 350 silver pieces reward. They gave us
another message to deliver to the King of Throal, Neden, for them for 350 more
silver pieces. Since we are headed to Bartertown and Throal anyway, we agreed
to help them. We looked for a sturdy riverboat to get us to Darranis but were
unable to find one at the port. There is nothing else to do besides rest and
wait for a boat to return.
-P
Raquas 28, 1521 TH Tansiarda
Boss,
We went down to the docks and a couple of
barges and ferries had returned to port. But the busy port was suddenly
attacked as we approached. A creature of pure shadow struck out at a dwarf
barge, and plunged its head right through the people and boat. The ship’s crew
was left as desiccated dwarf corpses on a rotting barge. The remaining people
at the port fled in terror. The shadow leviathan seemed to talk to Aylaa
somehow, as we rushed to the docks to do battle with the creature. It was hard
to see the creature in the water. Laira sent her skeletons to operate the dwarf
dock controls. One of the skeletons was savagely attacked and went tumbling
into the briny depths. The other made it, but brought up a half-built dwarf
bridge instead, before pulling on a dam levee. As the flow of water receded, it
began easier to spot the creature and attack it. Although the creature fought
ferociously, severely wounding Aylaa’s ice flyer and giving Zangetsu a few good
hits, the power of our magician’s spells ripped him apart. Lightning strikes,
razor orbs, and foul blades eventually killed the creature.
We got the town counsel of Tansiarda to give
us free passage on another dwarf barge for our trouble. On the way to Darranis,
Noratu explained that Ristul sent the shadow leviathan, like the shadow kraken
he sent earlier on the Tylon River.
-P

Sollus 6, 1521 TH Road to Bartertown, Plains
Boss,
An ebony ship of dark wood was firing its
fire cannons at a pursuing drakkar. The drakkar lit up in flames and started to
go aground, near us! We dodged the incoming airship, and returned to
investigate the crashed airship. Several Air Sailors had escaped major injury
by using their gliding abilities. It’s one of ours, R. We rushed to help douse
the flames and rescue the injured and then the dead for later burial, as well
as trying to get out as many supplies as possible. We managed to save
thirty-five of our men. They explained to us that they were pursuing a drakkar
that had attacked The Wandering Wayfarer. They snuck into the town in
the middle of the night, and firebombed the top of the inn. They had ork sky
raiders drop down into the inn and kill the guards, as well as a Nethermancer
who had deeply wounded Lilandra Silvertongue, the sole survivor and witness of
the attack. Since they had quickly scrambled to pursue the enemy, they had
little additional information. We are returning with the most injured airmen.
The rest we have left as a garrison to discourage scorchers from taking the
remaining ship parts. We returned to
Bartertown.

Spirit Swordmaster instead in secret at the monastery of Narai. His family for
this choice disowned him. He traveled all of J’Pang as a messenger and
mercenary searching for his soulsword but was unable to find it. Using the
wealth and Theran contacts he acquired in his years of searching J’Pang he
charted a flight aboard a Theran mining vedette to the Isle of Thera. He was
unable to find his soulsword there either, and made his way to Vivane aboard a
Theran military vedette in exchange for some contract work. He searched for his
soulsword in the ruins of Vivane by doing mercenary work for the Therans to
recover artifacts lost in the fall of Vivane. Using his experience in Vivane,
he left for Haven and attempted to do similar work there at Parlainth but found
himself at odds with the exploratory guilds operating there and made little
progress finding his soulsword even after several missions working for the
Therans. The group met him in Haven while doing a contract for Torgak. He met
Laira L’Zoril and was smitten with her power and beauty, leaving with the party
to explore the rest of Barsaive with them and hoping to find his soulsword.
Long-term Goals: Obtain his soulsword at any cost.
NPC CHARACTER BIOS 2
Salishi
Race: Dwarf
Profession: Scribe
Homeland: Throal
Organization: None
Organization: None
Passion: Chorrolis
Character Background: Salishi is a non-adept dwarf scribe hired by Noratu to keep his
appointments and to write the adventurer logs of the group. Originally from
Throal, he traveled to Haven looking for work. At Haven, he worked as a scribe
cataloging ancient texts recovered from Parlainth and recounting the tales of
adventurers who survived to make it back from Haven from Parlainth. He was
lured away from Haven by Noratu’s generous offer of 125 silver pieces monthly
and the rights to publish the group’s adventures. Salishi is
soft spoken and his demeanor tends to assist in getting people to open up to
him. Despite his garish fashion choices, his slouching body language and
deferential style tend to make him blend into the background as if he was part
of the room’s furnishings.
Long-term Goals: Make a tremendous amount of money by writing up the adventurer logs of
the group and acting as Noratu’s liaison.
Rules Update
The Acrobatic Strike talent or skill can be used as

Points.
